Researchers Awards 2018:

Prof. Rachela Popovtzer is an Associate Professor, Head of the Bioengineering Track and of the Lab of Nanomedicine at the Faculty of Engineering at BIU. She is also a member of BINA. Popovtzer’s multidisciplinary team of researchers was selected in 2017 to lead an EU project for developing nanoparticles that track the effects of cell-injection therapies for cancer and autism. She was awarded the 2017 Maria and Leon Taubenblatt prize for Excellence in Medical Research for her research on theranostic nanoparticles applied as a new personalized protein-based treatment.

Prof. Eli Barkai is a Prof. of Physics at the Department of Physics at BIU and a member of BINA. He heads a lab at BINA for photonics and optic research, focusing on theoretical aspects of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and single molecule spectroscopy. In 2018 Prof. Barkai received the Alexander von Humboldt Research award for scientific collaboration with German scientists.

Dr. Adi Salomon is at the Department of Chemistry at BIU and a member of BINA. She heads a lab at BINA which combines surface chemistry and nanophotonics, to synthesize new hybrid materials for fabricating metallic nano-structures that generate light energy. The lab is also part of the INREP (Israeli National Center for Electrochemical Propulsion) group aimed at advancing academic research on viable alternatives for fuel. Dr. Salomon received the 2018 Krill award of the Wolff Foundation for young scientists.

Dr. Beena Kalisky is at the Department of Physics at BIU and a member of BINA. she heads a physics lab at BINA that develops sensitive, non-invasive magnetic probes to study superconductivity, magnetism and bio-magnetism. Dr. Kalisky received the 2017 Nathan Rosen Memorial Prize in Experimental Physics for a Young Faculty Member, given by the IPS (Israel Physics Society).

Prof. Zeev Zalevsky heads the Electro-Optics study program at the Faculty of Engineering at BIU. He serves currently as the director of BINA’s Nano Photonics Center. Zalevsky is best known for his work on super resolution, and is an expert in optoelectronics and in applying light for information processing and biological sensing. He has established several companies based on innovative applications of optics technologies.

In 2017-2018 he received the following awards:

  • Prize4Life 2nd ALS Assistive Technology Competition Award Winner (2nd place).
  • IET Innovation Award Highly Commended Entry. The work entitled “Non-contact and continuous optical sensor for authentication and bio-sensing," was selected as one of five Finalists in the category of Emerging Technology Design in the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) Innovation Award of 2017 (out of more than 300 candidates).
  • Dr. Horace Furumoto Innovations Professional Development Young Investigator Award given by the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS).
  • Asian Advanced Materials Award for 2018 given by IAAM (International Association of Advanced Materials) for his outstanding contribution in the field of Advanced Materials and Technology.
  • National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Fellow Award for demonstrating a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.
  • 2018 BIG (Business Intelligence Group) Innovation Award. The micro-endoscopy technology he co-invented, commercialized as the startup Zsquare.
  • SPIE Prism Award for photonic innovation for co-inventing the remote laser based continuous bio-monitoring and authentication technology being developed by ContinUse Biometrics.
  • Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) Society Fellow Award for contribution in the fields of optical imaging and microscopy.
  • Top 20 Finalist of the Photonics Award at Startup World, Munich, Germany with the Zsquare medical solution for ultra-thin endoscopy technology.
  • Advances in Engineering Prestigious Key Scientific Article Certificate for his paper entitled “Silicon based mechanic-photonic wavelength converter for infrared photo-detection,” identified as a key scientific article contributing to research excellence in science and engineering (invited articles are less than 0.1% of the whole published literature).
  • The technology he co-invented, which was commercialized to ContinUse Biometrics was chosen by CBinsight (the top market intelligence platform of VC community) to be included in the top 40 (out of 2000) companies globally presenting at CBInsights A-ha! Conference on Demo Day.
