Leading Nanotechnology Institutions from China and Bar-Ilan collaborate in scientific research innovation

Leading Nanotechnology Institutions from China and Beijing collaborate in scientific research innovation (Published in CAS newsletter)

A new and exciting collaborative activity began this year between researchers from Bar-Ilan University's Institute of Nanotechnology & Advanced Materials (BINA), Ramat-Gan Israel and the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST), Beijing, China, an institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

During the summer of 2015, BINA members participated in the International ChinaNano conference in Beijing where the heads of the corresponding Nano centers, Prof. Minghua Liu from NCNST and Prof. Yuval Garini, BINA, met to initialize this collaboration. The official ceremony and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the parties on April 5th 2016 at the NCNST in Beijing. This very honorable signing ceremony was attended by Israel Ambassador Matan Vilnai, The Director General of the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS, Mr. Jinghua Cao and Vice President for research from Bar-Ilan University, Prof. Arie Zaban.

"Bar-Ilan University's strategic vision is focused on the great challenges of the 21st century" says Prof. Arie Zaban, "These challenges require international cooperation between scientists with innovative interdisciplinary approaches".  The signing ceremony was preceded by a two day intensive workshop where both sides presented their research work and proposals for collaboration in a span of disciplines including the fields of energy, drug delivery, bio-nano, biophysics, material science, chemistry and physics. The eight collaboration projects that are already underway were presented by the corresponding researchers in the centers.

"The key word in today's science applications is innovation" says Director General Mr. Jinghua Cao who provided his strong support to the signing of this collaboration by the Nano center directors. In a meeting between the leaders a strengthened and broadened collaboration between further CAS institutes and Bar-Ilan University was greatly encouraged.

"We have changed from symposium only to real person-to-person collaborations by projects and foresee the exchange of scholars and students between the institutes will occur very soon", added NCNST Director Prof. Minghua Liu.

In his speech to the researchers BINA Director Prof. Yuval Garini stressed, "The real success of the collaboration will be seen through the creativity and dedication of the members of both institutes that will run the research projects together with their students." The next meeting is already being planned by Bar-Ilan delegates to host their collaborators at a scientific innovation conference that will be held in Israel in April of next year.
