DNA vs. Biological Sex A New Perspective
🔬 Can a single DNA letter change biological sex?
A groundbreaking study published in Nature communications led by Dr. Nitzan Gonen from Bar-Ilan University, together with her student Elisheva Abberbock an excellence fellow of BINA, reveals just how powerful our genome’s regulatory code really is.
The research shows that a tiny mutation, just a single DNA letter, in a regulatory enhancer can override chromosomal sex and trigger male development in XX individuals.
Instead of altering genes themselves, this work highlights something even more fascinating: small changes in gene regulation, specifically in the enhancer controlling SOX9, can flip the entire developmental program. In mouse models, this was enough to activate male pathways even without a Y chromosome .
The takeaway? Biology isn’t just about which genes you have, it’s about how they are regulated.
👏 Huge congratulations to Nitzan and Elisheva on this impressive publication in Nature Communications! A remarkable step forward in understanding developmental biology.
